When Is a Brain MRI Medically Appropriate?

- You have tremors, involuntary movements, or coordination problems
- You have new-onset seizures or a change in seizure patterns
- You have unexplained vision changes, hearing loss, or facial numbness
- A neurological exam shows abnormal findings requiring imaging confirmation
- There is a family history of neurological disease and new symptoms have developed

A brain MRI provides detailed visualization of:
Gray and White Matter
Brain tissue composition. MRI detects demyelination (MS), strokes, and structural abnormalities.
Ventricles and CSF
Fluid-filled spaces in the brain. Enlarged ventricles or obstruction may indicate hydrocephalus or other pathology.
Blood Vessels
Cerebral arteries and veins. MRA (magnetic resonance angiography) can detect aneurysms, stenosis, and vascular malformations.
Pituitary Gland and Sella
Pituitary tumors, cysts, and hormonal dysfunction are detected with high sensitivity.
Cerebellum and Brainstem
These regions control balance, coordination, and vital functions. Lesions and abnormalities are clearly visible.
Sinuses and Temporal Bones
Incidental findings like sinusitis, masses, or ear pathology may be noted.

Standard Brain MRI
High-resolution T1 and T2-weighted imaging of brain tissue. No contrast. Most common and cost-effective.
Brain MRI with Contrast
Intravenous gadolinium to enhance visualization of inflammation, tumors, infection, or post-surgical changes. Requires kidney function screening.
Brain MRI with MRA
Includes magnetic resonance angiography to visualize cerebral blood vessels. Useful for suspected aneurysms, stenosis, or vascular malformations.
Brain MRI with DWI/PWI
Diffusion-weighted imaging to detect acute strokes. Time-sensitive protocol for acute neurological symptoms.
Contrast Safety and Kidney Function
If your brain MRI includes contrast, your provider will assess kidney function before the procedure. This is a standard safety check.
Kidney Function Screening
Your provider may order a kidney function test (eGFR) if contrast is recommended. Most patients do not need contrast for a standard brain MRI.
