Get Provider Order — $40Why Hospital Imaging Costs So Much More
The same MRI scan can cost dramatically different amounts depending on where you get it:
Hospital system MRI
High overhead, cross-subsidized billing, facility fees
Outpatient imaging center
Lower overhead, focused on outpatient volume
Independent cash-pay center
No insurance billing overhead, transparent pricing
The Complete Lower-Cost Imaging Workflow
Find a cash-pay imaging center
Search for independent outpatient imaging centers in your area. Call and ask specifically for the self-pay rate for your needed study. Compare prices across 2–3 facilities.
Get your provider order ($40)
Book a telehealth consultation with Diagnostic Orders Direct. A licensed provider reviews your symptoms and issues an order when medically appropriate. This is required by virtually all imaging centers.
Confirm the facility will accept the order
Call the imaging center with your order details. Confirm they accept provider orders from telehealth providers. Most do — but policies vary.
Schedule and pay the self-pay rate
Schedule your imaging appointment. Pay the self-pay rate directly to the facility. Total typical cost: $190–$640 ($40 consultation + $150–$600 imaging).
