Second Provider Review for Imaging

Your doctor said imaging isn't necessary, but your symptoms tell a different story. You have the right to seek an independent provider review — and if imaging is medically appropriate, an order can be issued.

Important Clarification

Diagnostic Orders Direct provides independent virtual provider reviews for the specific purpose of evaluating whether diagnostic imaging or lab orders are medically appropriate. We do not diagnose conditions, override specialist recommendations, or serve as a substitute for ongoing medical care.

When Patients Seek Second Provider Reviews

PCP recommended watchful waiting but symptoms are worsening

Imaging was denied as "not medically necessary"

Insurance pre-authorization was denied

PCP is unavailable and symptoms aren't resolving

Prior imaging was years ago and symptoms have changed

You want an independent clinical assessment before proceeding with treatment

How an Independent Review Works

The reviewing provider has no prior relationship with you and no stake in any prior clinical decision. They evaluate your case fresh based solely on what you share during the consultation:

Your current symptoms

What you're experiencing, when it started, how it's changed, what makes it better or worse.

Your symptom history

Prior evaluations, treatments tried, prior imaging results if available.

The prior provider's reasoning

If you know why imaging was declined, share that. The reviewer may agree, or may independently determine imaging is appropriate.

Medical history and medications

Relevant conditions and medications that affect clinical appropriateness.

The specific imaging you believe is needed

The provider will independently assess whether this or alternative imaging is appropriate.

Medically Appropriate — Not On-Demand

Orders are not issued simply because you request them or because a prior provider denied imaging. The reviewing provider independently evaluates clinical appropriateness. If they agree that imaging isn't warranted, no order will be issued. This is a feature, not a limitation — it ensures clinical integrity.

Considering Another Online Doctor Visit After a Prior Provider?

If you are still concerned after a prior visit — or are considering trying a SesameCare doctor, Amazon doctor-style virtual care, or another online option — DOD can provide a separate, independent diagnostic order review. This is not an override of a prior provider's judgment. It is an independent clinical evaluation of whether diagnostic imaging or lab testing is medically appropriate based on your current presentation.

Possible outcomes of the review include:

  • • Order issued — if the reviewing provider independently determines imaging is medically appropriate
  • • Modified order — different exam, body part, or protocol recommended
  • • Records requested — provider may request prior notes or imaging before deciding
  • • In-person or specialist recommendation — if the clinical picture warrants it
  • • No order — if the provider independently agrees imaging is not appropriate at this time

DOD does not say prior providers were wrong and does not override other clinicians' recommendations. Each review is independent.
