How It Works
Submit Your Request
Complete a brief online intake with your symptoms, history, and the study you are requesting.
Provider Reviews
A licensed provider reviews your request, medical history, symptoms, and any prior imaging or relevant labs.
Order Issued if Appropriate
If medically appropriate, an order is issued. You may take it to the imaging center or lab of your choice, subject to facility acceptance.
Pricing
The $40 fee covers the virtual provider consultation only. Imaging center, lab, radiologist, contrast, facility, and insurance fees are separate and vary by facility. Diagnostic Orders Direct is not affiliated with any imaging center or lab.
For contrast-enhanced MRI studies, recent renal function (eGFR) results may be required. If results are unavailable, the provider may order labs before issuing the MRI order, or may recommend a non-contrast alternative.

Current symptoms and duration
Relevant medical history and prior diagnoses
Prior imaging results, if available
Contraindications to MRI (e.g., metal implants, pacemakers)
Contrast indications — renal function/eGFR may be required for contrast-enhanced studies
Red flags requiring emergency evaluation rather than routine imaging
Clinical appropriateness of the requested body part and study type

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an MRI and when is it used?
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of soft tissues, organs, joints, and the brain. It is commonly ordered for neurological symptoms, joint pain, spine conditions, and evaluation of internal organs.
What types of MRI are available?
Common MRI types include brain MRI, cervical/thoracic/lumbar spine MRI, knee MRI, shoulder MRI, hip MRI, abdominal MRI, pelvic MRI, cardiac MRI, and whole-body MRI. Each targets specific anatomy and clinical questions.
Can I get an MRI order without seeing a doctor in person?
Yes. A virtual provider review is conducted via our online intake platform. The licensed provider reviews your request, symptoms, and history. If medically appropriate, an MRI order may be issued.
Is the MRI order guaranteed?
No. Orders are issued only when medically appropriate as determined by the licensed provider. The provider may recommend a different study or no order.
Does the $40 include the MRI scan?
No. The $40 covers the virtual provider review only. MRI scan fees, radiologist fees, contrast fees, and facility fees are separate and vary by imaging center.
Do I need eGFR labs before an MRI with contrast?
Some contrast-enhanced MRI studies require recent renal function (eGFR) results. If not available, the provider may order labs first or recommend a non-contrast study.
Educational Resources
MRI vs. CT Scans vs. Ultrasound
MRI excels at soft tissue imaging — brain, spinal cord, joints, ligaments, and organs. CT is faster and better for bones, acute trauma, and lung findings. Ultrasound is radiation-free and useful for abdominal, pelvic, and vascular studies. The right choice depends on your symptoms and clinical question.
Learn MoreWhen Is an MRI Necessary?
An MRI is appropriate when plain X-rays or physical examination alone cannot diagnose your condition. Common indications include persistent back or joint pain (6+ weeks), unexplained neurological symptoms, suspected soft-tissue injuries, and evaluation of internal organs.
Learn MoreMRI Safety & Preparation
Metal objects, pacemakers, and certain implants can interfere with MRI safety. Always disclose implant history during intake. Most MRI studies do not require fasting. Contrast studies may require eGFR lab results.
Learn MoreSelf-Pay MRI Costs
Most self-pay MRI studies cost $400–$800 depending on your facility and whether contrast is used. The $40 consultation fee covers provider review only. You control where you schedule and which facility you choose.
