Severe abdominal pain is an emergency. Sudden, severe abdominal or back pain may indicate AAA rupture — a life-threatening emergency. Call 911 immediately. This service is for non-emergency AAA screening consultation only.
AAA Screening Guidelines
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) provides specific recommendations for AAA screening:
Grade B Recommendation — Men 65–75 who have ever smoked
One-time AAA screening ultrasound recommended for men aged 65–75 with a smoking history of 100 or more cigarettes in their lifetime. This is the strongest evidence-based AAA screening recommendation.
Grade C — Men 65–75 who have never smoked
Evidence supports offering screening selectively based on family history and patient preference. Provider review determines individual appropriateness.
Family History Risk
First-degree relatives of patients with AAA have 2–5x higher risk. Provider review may consider screening for individuals with strong family history of AAA even outside standard criteria.
