Preventive Heart Scan Provider Order Review

Preventive cardiovascular imaging — including coronary calcium scoring and coronary CT angiography — typically requires a provider order. Our $40 virtual review provides risk-based assessment to determine if an order is appropriate for your situation.

Chest pain requires emergency evaluation. If you are experiencing chest pain, pressure, shortness of breath, arm or jaw pain, or other cardiac symptoms — call 911 or go to the ER immediately. This service is for non-emergency preventive cardiovascular imaging consultations only.

Preventive Cardiovascular Imaging: An Overview

Preventive heart scanning is a category of cardiovascular imaging performed in asymptomatic patients to assess subclinical cardiovascular disease risk. These studies are not universally recommended and are typically considered only in patients with intermediate cardiovascular risk.

Preventive cardiovascular imaging is not appropriate for everyone. Provider review assesses individual risk factors, medical history, and clinical guidelines to determine if imaging is medically appropriate for your situation.

Cardiovascular Imaging Studies Available for Review

Coronary Artery Calcium (CAC) Score

A non-contrast CT scan that quantifies calcified plaque in the coronary arteries. Generally considered for asymptomatic patients aged 40–75 with intermediate cardiovascular risk to help guide treatment decisions.

  • • No contrast required
  • • Low radiation dose
  • • Result: Agatston score (0 = lowest risk)
  • • Does not visualize non-calcified plaque

Coronary CT Angiography (CCTA)

A contrast-enhanced CT study that visualizes the coronary arteries to assess both calcified and non-calcified plaque burden. More detailed than CAC but involves contrast, more radiation, and heart rate preparation.

  • • IV contrast required (eGFR review needed)
  • • Heart rate management typically required
  • • Visualizes non-calcified plaque
  • • Higher radiation than CAC

Risk Factors Reviewed During Consultation

Our provider review considers cardiovascular risk factors to determine whether preventive heart imaging is medically appropriate for your individual situation:

Age (typically 40–75 for CAC consideration)

Family history of premature heart disease (first-degree relative <55 men, <65 women)

Elevated LDL or total cholesterol levels

Hypertension (high blood pressure history)

Smoking history (current or former)

Diabetes or pre-diabetes

Obesity or metabolic syndrome

10-year cardiovascular risk score (intermediate 7.5–20%)
