Chest pain or cardiac symptoms require emergency evaluation. Call 911 or go to the ER for chest pain, shortness of breath, palpitations, or other urgent cardiac symptoms. CCTA is for non-emergency cardiovascular imaging only.
What CCTA Involves
IV Contrast Required
CCTA uses iodine-based IV contrast to highlight coronary arteries. Kidney function (eGFR) must be assessed. CT/MRI contrast studies require eGFR review and facility-specific preparation.
Heart Rate Preparation
A heart rate below 60–65 bpm is typically required for optimal image quality. Beta-blockers are often administered before the scan at the imaging facility.
Radiation Exposure
CCTA involves more radiation than a CAC scan. The decision to proceed should weigh cardiovascular risk against radiation and contrast exposure.
Detects Non-Calcified Plaque
Unlike CAC scoring, CCTA can identify soft (non-calcified) plaque — sometimes called 'vulnerable plaque' — within coronary artery walls.
Not Universally Recommended
CCTA is not appropriate for all patients. Provider review determines whether CCTA is clinically indicated based on your individual risk profile and clinical situation.
Facility Acceptance Varies
