Why Florida Patients Use DOD

Florida has one of the largest populations of retirees and seasonal residents in the United States. Many patients in Miami, Orlando, Tampa, and Fort Lauderdale are retired, recently relocated, or spend only part of the year in Florida — and may not have an established primary care provider in the state yet. Cash-pay diagnostic imaging is widely available in the Miami metro, Tampa Bay area, and Central Florida. Patients who find an affordable imaging center in Sarasota, Naples, or West Palm Beach often encounter the same obstacle: the facility requires a provider order before scheduling. DOD provides the provider review step so these patients can move forward without waiting weeks for a new-patient PCP appointment in Florida.

Florida has a highly competitive outpatient imaging market with numerous independent cash-pay imaging centers, especially in South Florida, the Orlando metro, and the Tampa Bay area. Many facilities in the state operate on a cash-pay or self-pay basis, offering significantly lower prices than hospital imaging departments. These facilities still require a current provider order for liability and documentation purposes. Patients choosing facilities in Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, or St. Petersburg should confirm the facility's specific order format requirements before scheduling. DOD is not affiliated with any Florida imaging center or laboratory.

What DOD Can Review in Florida

DOD provides virtual provider review for the following diagnostic order types in Florida. Click a service for detailed information.

Why Imaging Centers in Florida Require a Provider Order

Most imaging centers, outpatient radiology facilities, independent labs, and diagnostic testing centers in Florida require a valid provider order before scheduling any diagnostic study. This includes MRI, CT, ultrasound, X-ray, mammogram, DEXA, EKG, and lab testing. The order must come from a licensed medical provider and document the clinical indication, the requested exam, and the relevant patient information.

DOD focuses specifically on this provider-review step — reviewing diagnostic order requests and issuing an order when a licensed provider determines it is medically appropriate, so the patient can move forward with scheduling at their chosen facility.

Book a $40 virtual consultation

Schedule online using the booking link above. No insurance required. No PCP referral required.

2

Provide your information

Share your symptoms, medical history, requested study, body part, prior records, and your chosen Florida facility name and fax number if known.

3

Licensed provider reviews your request

A licensed medical provider independently reviews your request based on clinical appropriateness — not patient preference alone.

4

Provider decision

The provider may issue the order, recommend a different exam, request more records, recommend in-person or urgent care, or decline if not medically appropriate.

5

Order delivery to your chosen facility

If medically appropriate, DOD can fax or securely email your order to your chosen Florida imaging center, lab, or diagnostic facility, subject to that facility's acceptance policies.

6

Patient confirms and schedules

You confirm facility acceptance, pricing, and scheduling directly with the Florida facility. Radiology results routing is arranged with the facility.
